Before turning a single bolt on the MK Indy RX-5, we knew we needed a solid, mobile foundation – an RX-5 build stand that would allow us to safely support the chassis and manoeuvre it around the workshop with ease.
To ensure we got the design right from the start, we reached out to MK Sportscars, who kindly provided a sketch of the stands they use in their own workshop. With that helpful guidance, our engineers produced a detailed CAD model based on MK’s suggested dimensions and material specifications.
MK initially recommended a frame made from 50mm x 50mm x 1.5mm box section. However, after building our first stand to those specifications, we decided to manufacture a second version using 40mm x 40mm x 2mm box section, which we found to be sturdier and better suited to our needs.
We finished the stand with two strips of 40mm wide by 10mm thick solid rubber mounted using 3M double-sided tape. This addition provides excellent support and minimises movement while working on the chassis.
Positioning was critical. Following MK’s guidance, we made sure the chassis sat in such a way that the front brake tee piece is located directly over one of the cross supports. Through trial and adjustment, we also found it works better to place both braked wheels on the same 2-metre side, rather than on opposing corners.
We were also delighted when MK Sportscars featured our RX-5 build stand design on their website – a small but significant milestone as our first indirect promotional feature.
This RX-5 build stand has already proven its worth, making the early stages of the RX-5 build safer, more efficient, and more mobile. It’s a great example of how our engineering expertise isn’t just about building cars – it’s about creating the right tools to build them better.
