Flyin’ Miata: Our MX-5 Donor Car Takes to the Air (Literally)

Jul 7, 2025

After a full risk assessment, a detailed method statement, and the odd twitchy bum moment, we’re pleased to unveil PMG Motorsport’s very own Flyin’ Miata – quite literally.

Our MX-5 donor shell now hangs proudly above the RX5-140 build, keeping a watchful eye over the workshop like some kind of track-day guardian angel. It’s not going anywhere just yet – but it is enjoying a bit of elevation while it waits its turn. And yes, the name Flyin’ Miata is a cheeky nod to the legendary MX-5 tuning company across the pond.

A Surprisingly Solid Starting Point

This particular MX-5 donor turned out to be in absolutely superb condition. The chassis rails are clean, the sills are solid, and the bodywork is remarkably tidy. We’re guessing it spent much of its life tucked away in a garage or barn. Either way, it’s the ideal base for what’s shaping up to be next year’s big project: a full-blown, track-prepped PMG Motorsport MX-5 build.

What Will It Become?

That depends entirely on which team member you ask.

The current debate is split between dropping in a 3.0-litre Jaguar AJ-V6 – for proper noise and something a bit different – or keeping it Mazda-pure with a forged, high-boost 1.8 BP-4W turbo setup. Either route promises serious pace and even more serious grins. But one thing’s certain: it’ll be a stripped-out, track-focussed machine wearing our PMG colours and branding with pride.

Expect bucket seats, harnesses, minimal trim, and maximum fun.

Watching Over the RX5

For now, our Flyin’ Miata is in observation mode – floating above the action as the RX5-140 build continues underneath. That project’s progressing well (most days), but like any proper kit car build, there’s always something that needs fettling, refining, or completely rethinking.

The MX-5 is next. Probably. Unless, of course, we finally give in to temptation and start the Haynes Roadster build…

Anyone got any spare parts for one of those?
