When starting our MK Indy RX-5 build, we knew from the outset that the ideal donor vehicle would be a Mazda MX-5 Mk2 or Mk2.5 1.8-litre. While either generation would work, we were especially keen to find a Mk2 — ideally one of the higher-spec models like the Icon, 1.8iS, 10th Anniversary, or Jasper Conran edition — since these typically come equipped with a limited-slip differential (LSD) as standard.
Although gearbox choice wasn’t critical for us, we had a strong preference for the five-speed transmission. It’s well-suited to the RX-5 and more than capable for track or road use. The six-speed gearboxes, while desirable and commanding a higher resale value, weren’t essential for our goals.
After a bit of searching, we came across a completely standard Mazda MX-5 Mk2 1.8 in excellent condition. With under 90,000 miles, documented service history, and most of its historic MOTs, it was exactly what we needed. It even came with a factory hardtop – a nice bonus with strong resale value on its own.

Most importantly, the car drove well: no smoke, clean oil and coolant, and a current MOT with no advisories. Everything about it just felt right.
Fast forward less than two weeks – and with a few spare hours here and there – the MX-5 was completely stripped to a bare shell, now in a thousand pieces. It was a great teardown experience for the younger members of the PMG Motorsport team and a valuable learning moment in real-world automotive engineering.

As part of the RX-5 build process, MK Sportscars operates an exchange scheme, where key donor parts are sent to them for modification and refurbishment. Once processed, they return updated components tailored for the RX-5-140.

We’re excited to keep pushing forward on the RX-5 project and will continue sharing updates as we go – from fabrication to fitting and eventually getting the car out on track.
