Why We Chose the MK RX-5 140 as Our Kit Car Build

May 5, 2025

After deciding to build our own car under PMG Motorsport, the next big question was – which kit car should we build?

Given our background and passion for the Mazda MX-5, the decision to base our project around this iconic platform came naturally. We know these cars inside and out, already had a stash of spare parts, and valued the proven reliability of the MX-5’s mechanics. So, from the beginning, we knew our kit car had to be MX-5 based.

There are five or six serious contenders when it comes to MX-5 donor-based kits, but we eventually narrowed our shortlist down to three front-runners:

We carried out extensive research on each platform, comparing chassis design, community support, availability of donor parts, and overall build quality. While each had its merits, our love for the classic Lotus Seven aesthetic brought us to a clear focus on the Zero and the RX-5 – both rooted in that timeless seven-inspired style.

The final decision came at the Race Retro Show at Stoneleigh Park in February 2025, where both GB Sports Cars and MK Sportscars had cars on display. The choice wasn’t easy – both offered well-engineered kits with strong reputations – but what tipped the balance was the MK team itself.

Sean, Neil, and Andy from MK Sportscars greeted us with genuine enthusiasm and infectious passion for what they do. Their dedication to their product and the supportive builder community behind it made a huge impression. MK also stood out thanks to:

  • A well-structured build manual
  • An extensive series of YouTube videos
  • A private Facebook group exclusively for MK RX-5 builders
  • Strong race pedigree and years of experience refining their chassis design

Another big plus was the integration of so many MK2 MX-5 parts, including the ability to reuse the original instrument cluster – a real bonus when working toward IVA compliance. The more we learned, the more confident we became.

To seal the deal, we arranged a factory visit the following week. MK gave us full access to their facility, and we had the opportunity to speak with the team, explore the workshop, and most importantly – test drive the RX-5 140. For anyone who’s driven one, you’ll know the feeling. That was the moment. The drive said it all.

The decision was unanimous. The passion, the support, the design – it all just felt right.
